LAGOS, June 17 — Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has become an unlikely internet sensation after football fans around the world flooded social media with comments about his appearance following Nigeria’s friendly defeat to Portugal.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the 25-year-old shot-stopper began trending online after television cameras focused on the Nigerian team during the pre-match presentation ahead of Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Portugal.

The attention quickly spread across social media platforms, with many users praising Okoye’s looks and sharing clips and images of the goalkeeper.

One post highlighting his sudden rise in popularity generated millions of views and tens of thousands of interactions, prompting a wave of humorous reactions from fans.

Some users joked about their partners discovering the goalkeeper online, while others noted that this was not the first time Okoye had attracted widespread attention on social media because of his appearance.

Additional images circulating online, including photographs showing the goalkeeper’s tattoos and physique, further fuelled the online buzz.

Away from the social media attention, Okoye only recently returned to international football after serving a two-month suspension linked to an illegal betting case.

The Udinese goalkeeper had faced the possibility of a lengthy ban after receiving a yellow card for time-wasting during a Serie A match against Lazio while his side were leading 2-1.

He was recalled to Nigeria’s squad in November 2025 ahead of a CAF 2026 World Cup play-off tournament in Morocco following the completion of his suspension.

In Thursday’s friendly against Portugal, Okoye played the full match, making four saves and recording a passing accuracy of 83 per cent.
